Tips: What should I wear to my engagement session?

One of the most common The most common question that I get when it comes to engagement sessions is “what do I wear?” it used to be the most common panic text that I would get a week before the session. I can remember buying 7 dresses online to try to find the “perfect” one. I scrolled Pinterest for hours trying to figure out what to wear, and it finally dawned on me that our engagement photos did not have to have the “perfect” dress or the “perfect pair of shoes.” I just needed to be comfortable, and in colors that looked good on me and complimented my fiance, and I needed to be able to relax and have fun. Here are my top five tips on choosing your outfit for your engagement session.

Tip 1 Coordinate your outfits, don’t match, coordinate.

Don’t hear me wrong, there is a time and a place for matching outfits (maybe your yearly family beach photo that your mom always made you take) but this is not the time for that. Choose outfits that are coordinated in style and color. My recommendation is always going to be neutrals or solid colors; they are timeless and they don’t take away from the emotion and feelings that are embodied in your session.

Tip 2 Stray away from tight stripe patterns and go for something simple

You know those optical illusions that you would look at when you were a kid, the ones that were just really close togethr stripes but somehow they looked like they were moving but were just so close together that they tricked your eye? That’s the kind of pattern that I am talking about. I always recommend choosing something you love, but also want you to have the most perfect photos possible and sometimes tight patterns like stripes can trick our eyes and draw the attention away from the moment that was captured. Instead of tight patterns I recommend adding in elements like texture, color, and accessories to showcase your personality!

Tip 2 Pick out an outfit (and shoes) that you can move in

There is nothing worse than getting to your engagement session that you wanted to do outdoors, and realizing that your cute little heels sink into the grass that you have to walk in or that your dress is so tight that you can hardly move.

Tip 4 order/Plan your outfits At least a month before your session

It’s the Monday before your Saturday engagement session and you found the PERFECT dress for your session. The only hiccup is that it says that shipping takes 3-7 business days (not to mention processing time). You realize that the dress might not come in time but you take the risk anyways, and sure enough Saturday rolls around and you don’t have a dress to wear for your session and you haven’t even thought of a backup plan. You scramble and throw on some old dress that you wore to your cousins wedding, and some shoes that don’t really match. You go to your session thinking about what your photos would have looked like had you ordered your dress in time. I don’t want this to be you! Start searching as early as you can for your ideal outfit and try to have everything planned at least a month before your session. Have all of your items in hand and ready to be worn no later than a week before your session (you will thank me later).

Tip 5: If you need help, always ask!

I am down to help you choose an outfit, because I have been there and done that. If you have questions about what would look best or if you need help with deciding an outfit to wear, just ask. If you are too scared to ask, I have linked a Pinterest board here to give you some outfit inspiration for your upcoming session! https://pin.it/7sZXxhV
